Solihull Conservatives have submitted a motion calling for further action to protect Solihull’s parks, countryside and communities from the threat of wildfires.
Following the exceptionally hot and dry conditions of summer 2026, the motion calls on Solihull Council to investigate all available legal and practical measures to restrict barbecues, disposable barbecues, campfires, fire pits and other open fires in public places where they present an unacceptable fire risk.
The motion, proposed by Cllr Edward Fitter and seconded by Cllr David Hoey, also calls for improved emergency procedures during periods of high wildfire risk and consideration of Public Spaces Protection Orders and other enforcement measures.
Cllr Edward Fitter said:
“This summer demonstrated how quickly fires can take hold during prolonged hot and dry weather. Prevention is far better than dealing with the devastating consequences of a wildfire, so we want the Council to investigate every sensible and proportionate measure available to protect our communities and green spaces.”
Cllr David Hoey said:
“We saw the danger first-hand this summer with wildfires in Catherine-de-Barnes in my ward. These incidents put our green spaces, wildlife, homes and communities at risk and place additional pressure on our emergency services. We need to learn from what happened this summer and make sure we have the right measures in place to reduce the risk of preventable fires in the future.”
The motion also recognises the work of West Midlands Fire Service over the summer and calls for the Council to work closely with the service, taking on board professional fire-safety advice and lessons from the forthcoming Wildfire Summit.
