At this week's Green Flag Awards ceremony, Solihull's Conservative-led Council retained all 19 of its prestigious Green Flag Awards.
In addition, Castle Bromwich Hall and Gardens and Blythe Valley Park were also recognised, bringing the total number of Green Flag sites across the borough to an impressive 21.
Widney Manor Cemetery has also been added to the list this year, meaning all three of Solihull's cemeteries now proudly hold Green Flag status.
With 19 Green Flag Awards retained by the Council, Solihull continues to hold more Green Flags than any other local authority in the Midlands, underlining the Conservative administration's continued investment in high-quality parks, open spaces and cemeteries that residents can enjoy while protecting and enhancing the borough's natural environment for future generations.
Cllr Ken Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “I am very proud of our parks and green spaces in Solihull. They provide a vital space for nature, enhance biodiversity, and boost our mental health and wellbeing, offering beautiful places for our residents and visitors to relax, exercise and enjoy the natural environment. This achievement would not be possible without the dedication of the many volunteers across the borough. So I’d like to thank our Friends of Parks groups, community litter pickers and Armed Forces Community Garden volunteers, whose hard work and commitment help keep Solihull's green spaces among the very best in the country.”
What is a Green Flag Award?
The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
The scheme aims to:
- Ensure everybody has access to high-quality green and open spaces, wherever they live.
- Ensure these spaces are well managed and meet the needs of the communities they serve.
- Establish standards of good management.
- Promote and share best practice across the green space sector.
- Recognise and reward the hard work of managers, staff and volunteers.
